The outspoken director, a critic of the country’s strict Islamic laws, went on trial in November, accused of making a film without permission and inciting protests by supporters of the opposition following the uproar in the aftermath of the controversial 2009 presidential election.

Panahi has been convicted of working against the Iranian system, the ISNA government news agency quoting lawyer Farideh Gheirat said.

Jafar Panahi has won awards at the Chicago, Cannes and Berlin film festivals. Several of his films have been banned in Iran.

The lawyer said the movie maker had also been banned from making films, writing scripts and travelling abroad by a court.

“Panahi has been sentenced to six years in jail on a charge of participating in a gathering and carrying out propaganda against the system,” said Gheirat.

The movie maker was even barred to talking to foreign media for 20 years.

Another Iranian film-maker, Mohammad Rasulov, also received a six-year sentence on similar charges. Rasulov was making a film with Panahi before his arrest.
