The Ukrainian-Iranian Arms Deal

Posted in Uncategorized by fartashphoto on June 27, 2010

Ukrainian arms dealers smuggled 18 nuclear-capable cruise missiles to Iran and China in 1999-2001, Ukraine’s prosecutor-general has said.

The Soviet-era Kh-55 missiles – also known as X-55s – have a maximum range of 2,500km (1,550 miles). They are launched by long-range bombers.

It added that the missiles were not exported with nuclear warheads.

The smuggling happened while Leonid Kuchma was president of Ukraine. His administration was voted out of office in December.

The Financial Times reports that the missiles could reach Japan if fired from mainland Asia or Israel if fired from Iran.

Ukraine reportedly had 1,612 of the missiles after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

The Kh-55, known in the West as the AS-15, is designed to carry a nuclear warhead with a 200-kiloton yield.

Unlike a ballistic missile, it is hard to detect a cruise missile when it is launched. The KH-55 flies at medium altitude for the first part of its flight. Cruise missiles can fly at low altitude and weave in between mountain ranges to minimize the risk of detection. They are much more difficult for SAMs and other air defenses to track or attempt to engage. The only way to effectively deal with cruise missiles is to use AWACS to guide in fighters. Even then it’s hard for the fighters’ AAMs to engage the missiles. Trying to intercept cruise missiles over land is a difficult challenge for the defending side. BBC Article

And Ukraine’s State Export Control Service said it did not authorize any sales of long-range cruise missiles to Iran or China.

On May 2010, The White House announced that Ukraine was giving up all its highly enriched uranium, marking success for a major U.S. arms control initiative shortly before President Barack Obama opens a conference on locking down nuclear materials.

Share Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said the Ukrainian stockpile, sufficient for several nuclear weapons, would be transferred to the United States for reprocessing by 2012.

While Ukraine needs money, there must be some other way of providing some money to that country. It has a large technical population and computer scientists. May be India can help in subcontracting some of the outsourcing contracts to Ukraine with strong supervision to help that country avoid ridiculous Arm sells which will eventually help the terrorists.

Then we all know that Iran had Nuclear Capable missiles from long time back and just need the highly-enriched uranium which fit in warhead. Those that they say Iran is still far from the nuclear breakout, they’re not aware of the facts even some figures like Robert Gates and General Petraeus.
